On the 21st September 2021, World Alzheimer’s Day, Alzheimer Scotland held their annual conference. It was a virtual event which was attended by people with dementia, carers, practitioners and other members of the public from all over Scotland.

In the afternoon session, the SDRC was delighted to support a session titled Treating Dementia, What’s next and how do we get there?

We know there are so much research ongoing across Scotland in all disciplines and types of dementia and brain health research. However, this session was particularly focussed on drug discovery and inspired by the approval of aducanumab in the US. We aimed to describe the process in which new treatments will be discovered for dementia. It also explained the journey from the discovery of a potential new treatment in labs through to clinical trials and beyond.

This Conference session was chaired by Alzheimer Scotland’s Director of Policy and Practice Jim Pearson, and featured four guest speakers, each with a different perspective of dementia research:

  • Miriam Scarpa, a lab scientist at the University of Glasgow
  • Terry Quinn, reader at the University of Glasgow (and SDRC Executive Committee member)
  • Eileen Penman, a research participant at the European Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease (EPAD) consortium
  • Martin Rossor from Join Dementia Research

The recording of this session is available on the Alzheimer Scotland website, under Session 3.

We have also uploaded Miriam (part 1) (part 2) and Terry’s (part 1) (part 2) presentation from the day.
